I bought the Mornwell D02B (Black) toothbrush to try out as a replacement for an older Mornwell D01 sonic toothbrush I have had for several years I have liked very much. Since I still had the Mornwell D01, I thought I would put together a quick comparison between the two, share my likes and dislikes of the new model.Much like the main brand sonic toothbrush (that starts with Sonic) with different models and different price points, there are differences between features and price points between this newer D02B model and the D01 model.Cost: I paid $29 dollars for the D01 model when I got it. For the D02B model, I paid $17. This is more than 50% savings in cost. For the name brand model, you can pay greater than $150 or more for the diamond premium model with 5 modes or half that for the more basic model with 3 modes.Appearance – Both D01 and D02B are the same size and use the same heads. The heads are snap on and are readily available from several vendors on amazon. The brush heads from the name brand sonic company also fit on both of these models, but of course, are at a cost premium.Modes: - The D01 has 4 modes – Clean, soft, whiten, and massage. The The D02B model has 3 modes: Clean, soft, and massage. Since I have both models, I can compare. The clean mode is the strongest mode and are very similar on both models. I would say the D01 is slightly stronger but not by much. The soft mode is noticeably softer on the D02B model and much softer than the clean mode. While I don’t use this mode much, It is a plus for those just starting with a sonic toothbrush as it can take some time getting used to. The massage mode on both models is very similar and I can’t tell the difference. The missing “whiten” mode missing on the D02B is just runs at a higher vibration rate and is not quite as strong as the clean. (It doesn’t move as much but vibrates faster). I primarily use clean mode so not having this is not a big deal. The D02B model has a single button to turn the unit on and then cycle between modes. The D01 model has a separate button to cycle between modes. I do like the separate button better but both are functional.Look and feel: Like I said, the D02B is the same size and shape as the D01. For the handle/base, both are made of plastic but the D01 model has a coating that is a little softer feel to it. But hey, they both are toothbrushes. Plastic, soft or not, both are easy to clean and its not a big deal to me.Charging and use between charges: I have been using the D02B model now for over 3 weeks. The first charge is still going strong so I would estimate at least 4 weeks on a charge with normal use. My D01 model would last me over 2 months on a single charge. Both are great and I am sure the battery will give great service for 2+ years if you are only charging it once a month. By the way, the user manual states that you want to leave the base on the charger when not in use. This doesn’t make any sense to me and from my understanding of recharging batteries, this may lessen the number of useful charge cycles of the battery. I would only recharge once a month or when the battery is obviously discharged. The D02B has a USB cord for the charger that plugs into any USB based charger that you commonly use for your phones or any other electronic device. The D01 has a regular power cord plug in for its charger base. Both work great, you don’t use them that often, and both charging methods are readily available for me.For the D02B model, there is an improvement on the way the brush head fits on the unit. There is a better gap between the brush head and the base of the units. For the D01 model, after using a brush head for a time, the wear on the brush head would allow the head base to become very close to the base and would interfere with the vibration of the brush head. At times I thought the unit was defective and wouldn’t vibrate the same as it used to. A new brush head or an The newer D01 model has a slightly improved gap and seems to not have this same problem. In summary, the newer D02B unit is a value unit to the original D01. It cost less but has less features. However, it does the same job, cleans my teeth and does it well. I wouldn’t hesitate purchasing either model in the future and have no reason to go back to paying for the major sonic brands, even for their value models which are still significantly more expensive than Mornwell. I would definitely purchase from Mornwell in the future.
